When Everything Changed

Updated: 4 days ago

After I digested the results from the first test (well, thought I had—hello, foreshadowing lol), I heard my boyfriend waking up. It honestly felt like everything around me slowed down, like time hit pause, and I was about to shake his whole world.

He looked at my face and instantly knew something was off. I couldn’t even get the words out. My hand trembled as I slowly passed him the pregnancy test. It was like a ghost had walked into the room—his expression went blank, stunned. Then, without a word, he got up from the bed and gave me the biggest, most-needed hug I’ve ever received. My eyes welled up with tears.

My mom had me when she was 17, so coming from that background, I’ve always dreamed of doing things “the right way”—marriage first, then babies (I know life doesn’t always follow plans, but hey, a girl can dream, right?).

Before I could even begin to express the chaos and emotion swirling in my head, my boyfriend gently grabbed my face, looked me right in the eyes, and said:

“I’m here for you. Whatever you want to do, I support you.”

In that moment, I felt this overwhelming wave of comfort and support wash over me. The waterworks kicked in again. His words grounded me—gave me the safest feeling in the world.

The Second Test: Confirming Doubts

The second test? I was deep in denial. I made him take it and check. I couldn’t deal.

Only a minute passed—and bam, that second line showed up even faster than the first time.

Still, I lived in delulu like a reality tv star and was convince I need to take one more. We ended up going to the store. “Let’s get a real test this time,” I thought....as if the first two hadn’t already made it crystal clear.

The Third, Fourth, and Fifth Test: From Denial to Acceptance *kind of

This time, I grabbed a digital test with a bold, no-mistaking-it display. I figured if technology spelled it out for me, maybe I’d believe it. Then I proceeded to grab two more—a regular one and an early-response. (Lol “early,” as if we weren’t already very late.)

I read the instructions like I was taking a final exam—meticulous, precise, as if maybe I’d done the first two tests all wrong.

Then it happened.

“Pregnant.”

It flashed on the screen. The two lines showed up again on the others.

There was no more denying it. This was real. This was my life—changing.

It wasn’t some “movie moment” of joy and tears of happiness. It was a flood of shock, fear, and the beginnings of acceptance? A recent survey found that 65% of first-time moms feel a mix of joy and anxiety when they find out. I, however, was firmly planted in the anxiety zone—just hoping the joy would arrive eventually.

My heart raced every time I imagined what life with a child would mean. I was overwhelmed—with fear, with questions, with possibilities. And yet, somewhere deep in the mix, there was also something new blooming: strength.

It was time to stop running from the truth.

It was time to face this next chapter, ready or not.

Now, how am I going to tell my mom?!
